Some thoughts on this model
This 1990 Morgan 4/4 4-seater with aluminium body is a rare and charming expression of traditional British motoring, blending hand-built craftsmanship with lightweight engineering. Retaining the same basic design ethos since the 1930s, the 4/4 embodies Morgan’s dedication to analogue driving pleasure. The 4/4 name stands for four wheels and four cylinders, by 1990 the 4/4 was powered by a Ford-sourced 1.6-litre CVH engine, offering lively performance and mechanical simplicity.
Often incorrectly belived that the chassis' were made from wood, however it is in fact the frame for the body work which is made from Ash for its strength, flexibility and lightweight nature. Morgans of this era were built on a steel ladder frame chassis, with slidiing pillar front suspension and live axel at the rear. While not advanced by modern standards, it’s deeply engaging and very much part of the Morgan charm and will deliver a lively yet tactile experience as well as a massive grin to your face!
This particular Morgan 4/4 comes with a raft of upgrades making this particular car a rarer and more special offering than most other cars out there. The first and most significant upgrade is the aluminium body which was an expensive factory option. At the time most Morgans left Malvern with a steel body which added weight as well as a larger risk of rust and corrosion, by ticking the aluminium body option the original owner has bestowed this 4/4 with improved acceleration, braking and body control, as well as better prepared the vehicle for the harshness of British weather. Aluminium bodies were an expensive option owing to the greater level of skill required to coachbuild an aluminium body, the material being more challenging to work with. Further to the longevity of this car, it is widely known that Morgans use Ash wood in their build, 1990 was one of the earlier years where treating the wood became standard practice in order to avoid issues like woodworm, not normally an issue on most cars!
Another character enhancing upgrade on this car is the Twin 40 carbs added to the Ford 1.6 CVH engine. The double barrel carbs deliver a magnifcent additional induction roar to the already great sound track delivered by the 1.6, as well as further enhancing throttle response and delivering more power. When driving down your favourite British country B-road, the accompanying soundtrack delivers a fantastic sense of theatre ensuring a desire to take the long route wherever you go. The engine bay is a feast for the eyes thanks to the twin 40's, but further enhanced with the upgraded aluminium rocker cover and coated 4-branch manifold.
The 4-seater variant of the 4/4 is often overlooked with many people quite happy to be restricted to going 2-up. However the current owner reports that the biggest benefit of the 4-seater is in fact luggage space (enhanced further with a Librands luggage rack), with the rear seats having been used more often for weekend bags than people making this model a far more useable car for trips and weekends away where in the 2-seater you suddenly realise the enormous lack of space for bags.
On the outside this 4/4 looks fantastic finished in Ferrari Rosso Corsa which compliments the sand coloured leather beautifully. The exterior is further dressed with wire wheels, chrome bumpers, driving lamps and badge bar.
Accompanying the car is a large history file detailing much of the cars life, much of the servicing has been carried out by Melvyn Rutter aka the Morgan Garage who have been a Morgan dealer for nearly 50 years.
