Ranmore's Perspective

Some thoughts on this model

Few cars capture the quiet authority of post war British motoring quite like the Bentley S1 Flying Spur. Built at a time when craftsmanship still defined luxury, this elegant sports saloon combines the dignified presence of Crewe engineering with the lithe, purposeful lines that made the Flying Spur name so coveted. Effortless performance from its silky straight six engine meets a cabin trimmed in rich hides and polished veneers, creating an experience that is both commanding and deeply refined.

The Model

Launched in 1955 as the successor to the R Type, the S1 represented a significant step forward for Bentley, pairing traditional craftsmanship with meaningful mechanical advancement. A new chassis and revised suspension improved refinement and composure, while the 4.9 litre straight six engine, pioneered in the iconic R Type Continental, delivered smooth, unforced performance. With power steering and automatic transmission available, it was a thoroughly modern grand touring saloon despite its classical appearance.

The Flying Spur variant, most notably styled by H J Mulliner, introduced a more sporting character through its lower roofline, cleaner proportions, and subtle sense of forward motion. Its aluminium body is not only lighter than the standard steel structure used for the basic S1 models, but by its nature not vulnerable to rust. Period road tests praised its near silent cruising ability and effortless torque, while owners appreciated the richness of its materials and the quaility of its engineering. Today, the S1 Flying Spur is admired for its balance of dignity and dynamism, offering a driving experience defined by poise, refinement, and quiet authority, without the compromise that most cars built at this time might seem to offer to someone whose driving experience is derived from much more modern cars.

This Car

Finished in Velvet Green with gold hand-painted coachlines against a backdrop of tan Connoly hides, this example exudes elegance from the moment you set eyes on it.

The current custodian of this car has enjoyed its ownership for over 20 years, during that time the vehicle has been well kept in a heated and dehumidified garage. The car has been known to Ranmore since the owner bought it and we have carried out work for him including upgrading the suspension to S3 specification for enhanced roadholding.

Upon opening the door of this Flying Spur, you are welcomed with the signature classic Bentley aroma which instantly fills you with nostalgia. Everything inside feels just right, the Connolly leather, the beautifully finished wood, even down to the classic clunk sound when closing the doors. Nothing else hits quite like a coach-built Bentley from this era. Its interior is in excellent condition and wears its age incredibly well with charm and grace. It is fitted with an original Nardi wooden rimmed steering wheel, designed specifically for this model, it is a delight to hold and use; the original steering wheel in pristine condition also comes with the car.

It presents itself today well. Cosmetically it is not a concours condition car but remains very presentable and useable, mechanically though she is very sound. It is a car which can be used and enjoyed as it stands; of course, it would also offer the perfect base to begin an enjoyable, predominantly cosmetic, light reconditioning project during the next period of ownership.

In Summary

The Bentley S1 Continental Flying Spur is important motor car from Bentley, the first ever four door Continental model offering a unique combination of style, craftsmanship and mechanical advancement, which marked an important chapter in Bentley’s history. We have for sale here an honest and highly useable example, a strong and dependable motor car, filled with charm and character, ready to either hit the road to make some memorable journeys or indulge in some gentle cosmetic improvement. Either way, this is a wonderful motor car awaiting its next custodian.
