TVR Griffiths 500

TVR
TVR made much of the fact that at the 1990 NEC Motor Show an order was taken every 8 minutes for their new Griffith - it's a testament to both John Ravenscroft and Peter Wheeler who penned the design, that it still looks as fresh and modern today as it did when launched nearly 33 years ago.

Julien's Perspective

Some thoughts on this model

The proven recipe of shoehorning a large capacity V8 into a TVR began some 30 years earlier when Jack Griffith chose to replace his Grantura's 4 cylinder lump with a Ford 4.7 V8 - in doing so he not only lent his name to the now iconic model but also formulated a design principle that TVR have followed ever since. So much so, that the same dynamic principles have been employed by Gordon Murray and TVR engineers in the latest and third generation of the model, also titled Griffith.

Perhaps my favourite TVR, especially as it has the "full fat" 5.0 litre engine in situ, producing a very accessible and raucous 340 bhp, making it quite a handful if you are pushing on, that said it's happy and very composed at sensible speeds thus a terrific car for touring.

This Griffiths 500 was supplied new by "The TVR Centre" in October 1999, pleasingly the original sales invoice is on file. The first owner chose in my opinion the best exterior colour of metallic Imperial blue which certainly sets off all of its sweeping line and curves rather nicely, whereupon the lovely blue mohair roof together with a portland grey leather interior and prussian blue carpets all contrast well and add to its very appealing look.

A nicely factory specified car too, with both air conditioning, power steering and a 6 CD stacker !

A more recent addition has been the sensible purchase of a clever "folding surrey roof" by Cambria-Cirrus, which essentially replaces the larger heavy rigid TVR item which frustratingly takes up most of the boot space when stowed. It's very light and cleverly collapses so it can be stored in a bespoke bag behind the seats or the boot. (www.cambria-cirrus.com) I've included a photo of this in the boot. Please note the original hard top comes with the car along with a bespoke indoor car cover.

This Griffith has has just 2 former keepers both of whom have looked after it beautifully. Each has diligently serviced the car using known and appropriate TVR specialists throughout, with the first owner also replacing the out-riggers, whilst the second, (actually an established client) such is his appetite for perfection, had the whole car repainted. This is all of course verified by invoices for services and other works throughout and in the case of respray in November 2017, a complete photographic record aswell.

Mileage is appealingly low with just 27,615 showing on the odometer, a figure that's fully verifiable against all the MOTs on file that go back to its very first issued in 2002.

Just fully serviced by the excellent TVR 101, where they importantly replaced all fuel hoses to E10 specification and rebuilt its steering rack with a geometry set-up/check post fitment.

This Griffith is simply ready and primed for just its 3rd owner !

It would be a pleasure to answer any questions you might have. However, to really appreciate this TVR it needs to be seen “in the flesh”, so do please call me directly on 07788 865700 to arrange a viewing.
