Some thoughts on this model
Chosen for its high degree of originality and for the ability to renovate rather than restore, it had been laid up since 1972 and at this point it appeared to have covered just 44,000 miles. Work commenced some 3 years ago and although the major component project was finished some time ago, the owner has maintained an extended period of finishing and detailing, which now makes it very close to concours condition in our opinion.
The Certificate Of Authenticity shows options of Blaupunkt Bremen radio, loudspeaker, antenna, wooden sports steering wheel and Dunlop tyres and all importantly, apart from the tyres the option list survives intact albeit with a replacement antenna.
Being a 1965 produced car it is the "3 dial" dash model and has some early production parts such as solid front strut tops, original and rare washer bag situated on the right hand front inner wing, Mann and Hummel air filter canisters and 4-screw horn grilles. Much of the interior is in original condition other than the headlining and front seat cord inserts expertly replaced during renovation.
The body shell received a full repaint in the original colour of Polo red and is complemented by the original trim being re-chromed including the wheels which were shod with 5 new Michelin XAS tyres (now having done approx 2000 miles).
The suspension is as per original specification and is at the same ride height Porsche set it up in 1965. The braking system has been recommissioned and the engine completely rebuilt approximately 2000 miles ago by Porsche specialists (file invoices total in excess of £6000) with new exhaust, all tinware powder coated, and engine bay fully detailed including the rarely fitted rain tray.
The 902 "dogleg" 5 speed gearbox is original and is precise and smooth in all gears with superb sychromesh just as Porsche designed it.
In summary, a sensibly priced very early and rare Porsche 912, now in its 50th year, largely original, beautifully renovated and mechanically spot-on. This car can be inspected at my Grayshott showroom - please call 07788 865700.
