Opel GT

1969

Opel
There is no doubting the styling cues of the Opel GT...its DNA was certainly aligned to that of the Corvette and to my mind a Ferrari Dino rear end too ! Its no surprise then it was infact designed by Corvette stylist Clare Makichan, and the GT was Opel’s first two-seater sports car since 1924.

Julien's Perspective

Some thoughts on this model

It was marketed under the slogan "Nur fliegen ist schooner" (‘Only flying is more exciting’) with more than 103,000 built by the time production ceased in 1973.

With a kerbweight of 940kg, the 1900 GT could achieve 115mph, far from slow for a reasonably priced sports car of its time.

Despite reasonable high production numbers, many original GT have succumbed to neglect over the years so finding a good example nowadays is becoming increasingly difficult. Add that to the fact that just 148 were imported to the UK (all left-hand drive), and this makes them as they say, 'rare as hens teeth' !

This fine example was originally a US car but was imported to the UK remarkably some 45 years ago. It remains in its original metallic silver paintwork together with its factory black vinyl interior. Both aspects present really well with just some age associated wear to the latter. Period looking Wolfrace alloys compliment the period sports car look.

There are some quirky design features here, firstly the head lights. Using a small lever on the transmission tunnel next to the driver's seat, they are rotated around their longitudinal axis, which actually takes quite surprisingly a bit of force but ultimately function very well. Secondly, rather like the Corvette there's no actual opening boot, just a rear parcel shelf and a fold-up panel that conceals a spare tyre and jack.

Owning a GT is certainly fun and stands out from the crowd. Pleasingly there is an active and dedicated club membership here in the UK, which gives technical support and help with spare parts location, which are readily available from both the USA and Germany. I understand that this GT has been part of the UK registry for a good number of years, and certainly has appeared under its former ownership.

Recent mechanical expenditure ensures all is as it should be and it will be sold with a new MOT. Accordingly to 'how many left', it appears that there are just 51 GT's left on the road here in the UK, so certainly now a very rare car indeed and I would imagine this would be amongst best.

It would be a pleasure to answer any further questions you might have. This groovy Opel GT can be inspected at my Guildford showroom -please call me directly on 07788 865700.
