Some thoughts on this model

A stunning MGC GT that has been beautifully and completely rebuilt from the ground up, to a fast road specification at vast expense by some of the very best MG people in the business.

Originally supplied via Wadhams here in Guildford in 1968, there have been just five keepers since then, and was last acquired from a gentleman in Cornwall having been in his 40+ car collection for more than 24 years.

Looking through the history file and the realms of invoices, its a veritable feast of top end names associated with upgrading and restoring Morris Garage's finest! The works are all encompassing and involved the very best of what's available...the timeline for this extensive operation has been something approaching 4 years, so certainly a labour of love.

I'll briefly outline how and who, but of course very happy to go into more detail should you wish to call.

The body shell was completely stripped and chemically treated. New panels including wings, doors, sills etc were supplied by MG Motorsport. The entire rebuild and painting was undertaken by Classic Car Restorations and finished in an original MGC colour Tartan Red.

Brian Slark personally rebuilt the engine using his copy of the original Downton University Motors drawings. Cylinder head and block were chemically cleaned by Ivor Searle prior to the engine being rebuilt with a lightened and balance fly wheel, omega pistons, rods and crank producing approximately 175 bhp. Kent Cams supplied their A4 camshaft, very reminiscent of Austin Healey 3000 Rally Spec type. MGOC supplied the high-torque starter motor, facet fuel pumps plus much else.

The exhaust note is just fabulous courtesy of a special 'Maniflow Exhaust' system built again to a Downton spec which has a 6 branch/twin pipe setup with twin silencers.

Transmission was sent off to Hardy Engineering who rebuilt the gearbox & overdrive, along with the rear axle and adding a Quaife MGC differential.

Suspension, steering and brakes saw the involvement of both MG Motorsport and Frontline. The former were responsible for the uprated torsion bars, 3/4' anti-roll bars and high ratio steering rack. Frontline supplied both adjustable front and superior 5 link rear suspension, plus 4 pot alloy brake kit with EBC discs and pads. A preference for period looking painted wires instead of mini-lites or similar were chosen and shod with correct Avon tyres.

The car has a bespoke wiring harnesses and new electrics throughout, with a 12v battery conversion, twin fuel pumps and coils, plus a battery circuit cutout switch..

Turning to the interior, it's tastefully and sensibly upgraded over the original spec to reflex more of a sporting pedigree. Given its fast road status a "Safety Devices" 6 point bolt in roll cage has been added, but for ease of access the front element has not been fitted. To enhance the driver's comfort further, MGOC premium leather reclining seats with an ultimate GT carpet set have been installed along with a lovely black Alcantara roof lining and twin sun visors. Frontline stepped in again with both their practical electric front widows and heated front & rear windscreens. There has been abundant use of Dynamat sound insulation throughout the car together with a heat-shield for the gearbox tunnel and the underside following along the exhaust system.

The eagled eyed amongst you will have noticed the white front flanks under the bumpers which are a homage to MG Motorsport. The leather bonnet strap is a practical adornment as is the use of toggle switches in the centre fascia of the cabin and certainly add to its overall sporty feel...the rally navigation lamp is also a convenient and welcome extra.

I've simply skimmed over the surface of all the new parts and accessories used here, plus not forgetting the exhaustive hours of labour that have gone into producing this fabulous fast road going MGC. Numerous visits to Frontline in the last 12 months have taken place to make sure the car's drive-ability and set-up is perfect, and I can attest to this having covered 50 or so miles behind the wheel ! It's certainly a very flexible unit with tremendous amount of torque on tap...not forgetting the wonderful engine/exhaust note, that all adds to deliver a wonderful driving experience.

Put it simply, this is a bespoke build of a very high standard, using beautifully engineered premium components.

It would be a pleasure to answer any further questions you might have. This lovely MGC can be inspected at my Guildford showroom - please call me directly on 07788 865700.
