Some thoughts on this model
This European specification Right-Hand Drive 280 SL was delivered new to its first owner in Sweden on 26th February 1969. Interestingly, some 18 months before, the Swedes had changed from driving on the left side of the road to the right, so a rare commodity in this RHD format. Remaining there for the following 49 years and covering just over 58,000 miles (93,500 KM).
Presented in its original factory specified colour combination of White (DB-707) with Tan MB-Tex interior and brown carpets with black convertible hood and pleasingly complete with its all-important original factory Pagoda hard-top. Importantly many of the cars original features remain including the Becker Mexico radio cassette, original glass and bright-work plus this vehicle is fitted with power steering and a 4 speed automatic transmission.
Despite being in super original condition throughout, the car was in need of updating and as is the often case, the necessary works led to the car being virtually dismantled and therefore it made more sense to embark on a full restoration.
Significant attention was given to rebuilding the entire rear suspension and replacing the dampers and springs, plus extensive mechanical work to the 'matching numbers' engine which has been beautifully detailed and plated, all before commissioning a full re-spray and a correct interior retrim.
Upon closer inspection this Pagoda exudes a very high quality of workmanship with an emphasis on retaining the cars important DNA, something the original visible factory spot welds around the edge of the engine bay and on the inner wings help confirm.
