Some thoughts on this model
Porsche cars built during this era show constant evolution both mechanically and cosmetically. Though fewer than 10,000 examples were constructed, there were a bewildering number of variations....there were 10 engine types and five body styles.
This particular 356 was built and optioned as 1500cc US spec car in Azure blue with beige leather it was originally sold via the legendary New York distributor of 'foreign cars', Max Hoffman in late 1953.
Beautifully and sympathetically restored in the US, this Porsche perhaps looks better today than when it first arrived in Mr Hoffman's NY Park Avenue showroom.
The photographic record of the restoration clearly shows the body-shell was taken back to bare metal and any area that was in need of attention was repaired in isolation rather than replacing the whole panel, thus preserving the integrity and as much of the original car as possible. The interior on the other hand, had sadly deteriorated over time and was in need of complete replacement. This has been done beautifully and the quality of the workmanship is quite outstanding; the drivers seat is now very much coveted !
Engine #34855 is a newly rebuilt pre 1955 1500cc 55 BHP unit, upgraded to Zenith carburettors but twined with the original transmission, all of which preserves the car's character plus making it immensely driveable. As you will notice, it is currently riding on 15' wheels, although I am delighted to say, we have the original 3.25 x 16' slotted wheels as well.
From Porsche records it is concluded that this is just one of 822 non split screen Coupes built in 1952, thus Chassis #11976 represents a rare opportunity to acquire a highly desirable early Porsche in beautifully restored condition. Now UK registered, the car has been fully serviced and set-up by PRS and is completely on the button.
