This Car

Presented in Peacock Blue with a contrasting Magnolia leather interior, this is a particularly well-judged colour combination for the Brooklands R Mulliner, suiting its imposing character perfectly. Inside, the Magnolia leather is complemented by dark blue carpeting, including lambswool over-rugs, along with dark blue leather to the top of the steering wheel and the top-roll, helping to reduce windscreen glare. The darker-stained burr walnut veneers are another hallmark of the Mulliner specification, adding to the sense of occasion inside.

On the road, ground is covered with remarkable ease, courtesy of Bentley's enduring 6.75-litre V8 and its effortless reserves of torque. It is a pleasure behind the wheel, feeling positive and taut, while its commanding driving position gives a real sense of occasion to every journey.

This Model

The Bentley Brooklands R Mulliner was the ultimate expression of Bentleys SZ-bodied saloon cars, introduced as the final, limited-production derivative before the arrival of the Arnage in 1998. Built exclusively in right-hand drive and based on the long-wheelbase Brooklands R, just 100 examples were produced, each individually numbered with a plaque on the dashboard.

Under the bonnet was Bentley’s enduring 6.75-litre V8, equipped with a light-pressure turbocharger and producing around 325bhp. The Brooklands R’s roadholding package brought firmer suspension and uprated brakes, while the Mulliner treatment added unique 18-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured bumpers and headlamp surrounds, distinctive wing vents, mesh grilles and an oval exhaust.

Inside, the emphasis was very much on traditional Bentley luxury. Dark-stained wood veneers, chrome instrument bezels, specially trimmed leather seats, embroidered Bentley headrests and a host of bespoke details distinguished the Mulliner from its lesser siblings.

With production of the SZ-generation saloons ending in 1998, the Brooklands R Mulliner stands as the culmination of a design and engineering lineage that had evolved over almost two decades. It combines the imposing character of the classic Crewe-built Bentley with the added exclusivity and sporting intent of Mulliner, making it a particularly significant late example of the marque’s pre-Arnage era.
